What a 1-star review really costs your business
Rating, click-through rate, calls: how a single bad review affects visibility and revenue – with a simple example calculation.

Many business owners underestimate how strongly a single bad review works. It doesn't just "cost" a few tenths in the rating – it changes how often your profile is clicked, who calls and who goes to a competitor instead.
The numbers behind the rating
88 % of consumers read reviews before contacting a local business.
Roughly one third leave a profile after a single bad review in a prominent spot.
Businesses below 4.2 stars receive significantly fewer enquiries – in many sectors up to 70 % fewer.
An example calculation
A business with 40 reviews and an average of 4.6 receives three fake 1-star reviews. The rating drops to 4.3. If one of these reviews also appears as the "newest" at the very top, the contact rate typically falls by a quarter. With 200 profile views per month and one enquiry per ten views, that's five enquiries fewer – month after month. At an average order value of 400 euros, that amounts to around 2,000 euros of lost revenue per month.
"Reviews aren't an image topic. They're a sales channel that quietly loses revenue – or wins it."
Why small profiles are hit hardest
The fewer reviews a profile has, the more each one weighs. With 15 reviews, a 1-star review pulls the average down by almost 0.3 points – with 300 reviews it's barely measurable. For practices, trades businesses and young companies the topic is therefore more existential than for chains.
The ranking effect
Google also takes review signals into account when ranking local search results. If the rating drops, visibility tends to drop – so you lose twice: on clicks, and among those who click.
What you can do
Identify inadmissible reviews and get them removed.
Reply professionally to genuine criticism.
Actively but compliantly ask satisfied customers for reviews.
The first point has the biggest lever and is the fastest to implement – in most cases within a few weeks.
